Why Work in Care?
As I sit in my office on the outskirts of Sunderland, watching the relentless rain fall on a grey Thursday morning, I find myself reflecting on a question many people ask:
Why would anybody choose to work in the Care Sector?
It’s a fair question. Care can be demanding. It can be emotional. And yes, on days like this, it can even feel a little soul-destroying.
But let me share with you why working in care is one of the most rewarding decisions you can ever make.
- It’s a Genuine Career – Not Just a Job
For nearly 30 years, I have worked in the Care Sector. During that time, it has given me countless opportunities to grow, develop, and better myself both professionally and personally.
While many friends in other industries have faced redundancy or struggled to find opportunities, care has never left me unemployed. It is a sector built on something that will always be needed — people caring for people.
If you are looking for stability, progression, and long-term opportunity, working in care is not just meaningful — it’s a safe and secure career choice.
- It’s a Growing Sector
When I was born in the early 1970s, life expectancy in the UK was around 72 years. Today, it sits closer to 84 — and it continues to rise.
A child born in 2026 has a 1 in 4 chance of living to 100.
What does that mean? It means more people will need support to live safely, independently, and with dignity. The demand for compassionate, skilled care professionals will only increase.
This isn’t a shrinking industry. It’s one of the most important and fastest-growing sectors in our society.
- It Feels Good — For You, Too
Looking after people and doing it well has a powerful impact — not just on those you support, but on your own mental wellbeing.
There’s something deeply reassuring about knowing you are helping someone remain safe and secure in their own home. It changes how you see ageing. I used to dread getting older. Now, I see older years as something far more fulfilling and varied than they were even a generation ago.
When you work in care, you’re not just improving someone else’s life — you’re enriching your own perspective on what life can be.
- It’s What We Ought to Do
Many people spend 40 or 50 years working hard, raising families, and contributing to society. When they reach their senior years, supporting them to live comfortably and safely in their own homes is what a caring, generous society should do.
Being part of a sector that delivers on that promise should make us all proud.
Care isn’t just a service — it’s a reflection of who we are as a community.
- You Meet Incredible People
One of the greatest privileges of working in care is the people you meet.
Over the past 30 years, I have worked alongside some truly brilliant colleagues who have become lifelong friends. And the clients I’ve had the pleasure of supporting have left me with unforgettable memories.
I’ve met:
- People who met the last five Kings and Queens
- Veterans who fought in the Second World War
- A man who flew Concorde
- A footballer who played in both the FA Cup Final and the World Cup
- A woman who made tea for The Beatles
These are not just clients. These are living history books, storytellers, and remarkable human beings.
You don’t just work in care — you become part of extraordinary lives.
The Rainy Days Are Worth It
Yes, on cold, wet mornings, it can feel tough.
But never discount the value of working in the Care Sector.
If you want a career that offers stability, growth, purpose, pride, and the chance to make a genuine difference in someone’s life every single day — then care could be exactly what you’re looking for.
If you’d like to be part of something that truly matters, we would love to hear from you.
